How Much Sun Do You Actually Need for Vitamin D?

There is no fixed number: at moderate-to-high UV, light skin with arms and legs exposed can make meaningful vitamin D in 10-30 minutes a few times a week, while darker skin needs several times longer and high-latitude winters may make sun alone insufficient. Production is self-limiting around 20,000 IU a day, so long sessions add burn risk, not vitamin D - short regular exposure well under your burn threshold wins.

Ask how much sun you need for vitamin D and you will hear everything from "ten minutes a day" to "an hour, minimum." Both answers can be right - for different people, on different days. The real answer is a moving target, and understanding the variables is the difference between a useful habit and a sunburn.

How skin makes vitamin D in the first place

When UV-B rays (the shorter, higher-energy slice of sunlight) hit your skin, they convert a cholesterol derivative in the skin into previtamin D3, which your body finishes into usable vitamin D. Three things follow from that:

  1. Only UV-B counts. It is the same wavelength band that causes sunburn, which is why vitamin D and burn risk always travel together.
  2. UV-B is fragile. It is filtered by the atmosphere when the sun is low, blocked by ordinary window glass, and heavily absorbed by melanin and sunscreen.
  3. The dose rate swings enormously - by season, time of day, latitude, and sky conditions. This is what the UV index measures.

The variables that change your number

So what's the actual number?

For light to medium skin tones, with arms and legs exposed, no sunscreen, at moderate-to-high UV (index 5+): research suggests somewhere in the range of 10-30 minutes, a few times a week, is enough to make a meaningful contribution toward the 600 IU (15 mcg) daily guideline - often much more than that.

For darker skin tones, multiply that time severalfold. For winter above roughly 35-40 degrees latitude, the honest answer is that sunlight alone often cannot get you there, which is why the NHS advises everyone in the UK to consider a 10 mcg (400 IU) supplement through autumn and winter.

If those ranges sound uselessly wide - they are, and that is the point. A fixed "15 minutes a day" rule is wrong most days of the year. Why more sun stops helping

Here is the part most people miss: vitamin D production is self-limiting.
