How long do you need to be in the sun for vitamin D?

Bottom lineAt moderate-to-high UV with arms and legs exposed, lighter skin often needs only 10-30 minutes a few times a week; darker skin needs several times longer, and below UV 3 sun produces almost nothing. Production self-limits around 20,000 IU a day, so long sessions add burn risk rather than vitamin D - short and regular beats long and rare.

For lighter skin tones at moderate-to-high UV with arms and legs exposed: often just 10-30 minutes, a few times a week. But the honest answer is "it depends," because four variables swing the number from minutes to hours:

The four variables

More time is not more vitamin D

Your skin's production is self-limiting: with extended exposure, it plateaus - your body caps out somewhere around 20,000 IU in a day, and the excess previtamin D simply breaks down. Burn risk, meanwhile, keeps climbing with every minute. So a long session mostly buys you damage, and the first minutes of a session are always the most valuable. Short, regular exposure wins.

For context, the daily guideline is 600 IU (15 mcg) for most adults. At high UV in light clothing, that can be minutes of sun; the full breakdown by season and skin tone is here.

Skip the mental math

This calculation - live UV, your skin type, clothing, SPF - is exactly what Femora's Sunshine feature automates. It shows your current rate ("~57 IU/min for you right now"), counts a session in real time on your lock screen, and tells you when to head for shade well before your burn time.
