What the fertile window actually means

Conception requires sperm to meet an egg. Sperm can wait inside the body for up to 5 days; the egg itself only survives 12–24 hours after ovulation. That math gives you a 6-day window per cycle when pregnancy is possible:

  • Days −5 to −3: moderate fertility - sperm deposited now can still be waiting at ovulation.
  • Days −2 and −1: very high - fresh sperm are positioned to meet the egg the moment it's released.
  • Day 0 (ovulation): peak fertility.
  • Day +1: moderate - the egg's window is closing fast.

If you're trying to conceive

Sex every 1–2 days during the fertile window gives you the best shot - daily is fine for most people. Don't wait for the "perfect" ovulation day; the days before ovulation are when most conceptions happen because fresh sperm are already in place.

Combine this calculator with body signals - cervical mucus consistency, basal body temperature, or ovulation predictor kits - for more reliable timing.

If you're trying to avoid pregnancy

Calendar-based fertility awareness alone has a typical-use failure rate of 12–24% per year - meaning roughly 1 in 5 people relying on it gets pregnant within 12 months. Combining calendar with BBT, mucus, and OPK (the symptothermal method) improves reliability significantly, but still requires careful daily tracking. Don't use a calculator alone as contraception.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fertile window?

The fertile window is the 6-day stretch in your cycle when pregnancy is possible. It covers the 5 days before ovulation (because sperm can survive that long in the reproductive tract) plus the day of ovulation itself (when the egg is released and can be fertilized).

When is the chance of conception highest?

Conception is most likely on the day of ovulation and the 2 days immediately before it. Many studies place peak fertility at 1–2 days before ovulation, when fresh sperm are already waiting in the fallopian tube when the egg arrives. After ovulation, the chance drops sharply: the egg lives only 12–24 hours.

Can I get pregnant outside my fertile window?

Pregnancy is most likely during the 6-day fertile window, but not impossible outside it. Sperm survival can vary, ovulation can shift, and irregular cycles make the window itself less predictable. If you're trying to avoid pregnancy, calendar-based methods alone aren't reliable contraception - they have a typical-use failure rate around 12-24%.

How long does the fertile window last each cycle?

About 6 days per cycle: 5 days before ovulation through the day of ovulation. The egg itself survives only 12–24 hours after release, but sperm can wait inside the body for up to 5 days, which is why the days leading up to ovulation count as fertile.

How can I tell if I'm in my fertile window without a calculator?

Watch for fertile cervical mucus (clear, stretchy, egg-white consistency), a slight rise in basal body temperature after ovulation, mild one-sided pelvic twinges (mittelschmerz), increased libido, and breast tenderness. Ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) detect the luteinizing hormone surge 12–36 hours before ovulation.

Does the fertile window change if my cycle is irregular?

Yes - if cycle length varies, the timing of ovulation varies with it. The luteal phase (ovulation to next period) is usually stable around 14 days, but the follicular phase stretches or shrinks. For irregular cycles, combine the calculator estimate with body signals (BBT, mucus, OPKs) for a more reliable window.
