Sunscreen, the UV Index, and Vitamin D: How to Get Sun Safely

The UV index governs both vitamin D and skin damage: below 3 you make little of either, above 3 both climb together. Sunscreen filters most UV-B and slows vitamin D, but real-world users rarely become deficient because of it. The workable pattern: a brief unprotected window well under your time-to-burn, then SPF 30+, shade, and clothing - and never, ever burn. High-risk skin should skip the unprotected window and supplement instead.

Sunlight runs a double business. It is the most efficient vitamin D source your body has - and it is also the main cause of skin aging and the biggest environmental risk factor for skin cancer. Neither fact cancels the other. The good news is that the trade-off is manageable once you can read the one number that governs both sides: the UV index.

The UV index, in one minute

The UV index (0 to 11+) measures the strength of skin-damaging ultraviolet radiation reaching the ground right now. The WHO bands:

Two useful rules fall out of this. Below UV 3, you barely make vitamin D but you also barely burn - winter sun is pleasant and mostly useless. From UV 3 up, both the benefit and the risk climb together, and time-to-burn becomes the number that matters. What sunscreen actually does to vitamin D

The physics is blunt: SPF 30, properly applied, filters around 97% of UV-B - the same rays that make vitamin D. In laboratory conditions, sunscreen nearly shuts synthesis down.

Real life is messier, in your favor. Studies of actual sunscreen users generally find they are not meaningfully more vitamin D deficient than non-users - because almost nobody applies enough, evenly enough, often enough to reach the label's protection, and because plenty of UV reaches skin before and around application. So the honest summary is:

The one non-negotiable: never burn

A sunburn is DNA damage with a visible receipt, and repeated burns - especially blistering ones - are strongly tied to melanoma risk. A tan is the same damage on a slower schedule; there is no such thing as a healthy tan, only skin defending itself. Whatever vitamin D strategy you run, it operates strictly inside the never-burn boundary.

A sane pattern that gets you both

  1. Check the UV index before you plan. Weather apps carry it; Femora shows it with a plain-language burn estimate for your skin.
  2. Take your vitamin D window early in an exposure, not late. The first 10-20 minutes at moderate UV do the most synthesis per unit of risk - the math on how much you need is here. Keep the window well short of your time-to-burn.
  3. Then protect. SPF 30+, reapplied every 2 hours (sooner after swimming or sweating), plus shade in the midday peak, sunglasses, and a hat when the index is high.
  4. Let clothing do quiet work. Fabric is the most reliable sunscreen ever invented - it just also stops vitamin D on the covered skin, which is why Femora asks what you are wearing when it estimates a sun session.

Who should skip the unprotected window entirely

If you have a history of skin cancer, a strong family history of melanoma, very fair burn-prone skin, lots of moles, or you take photosensitizing medication (some antibiotics, acne treatments, and others), get your vitamin D from diet and supplements and keep sun protection on. The same applies if your dermatologist has told you so - that advice outranks any general article, this one included.
