The conversion, and where 7.14 comes from

Anti-Mullerian hormone has a molecular mass of about 140 kDa, so one nanogram per millilitre is 7.14 picomoles per litre. ng/mL × 7.14 = pmol/L, and pmol/L ÷ 7.14 = ng/mL. A few labs print 7.143; the difference is invisible at the precision results are reported to. Values in µg/L are identical to ng/mL and need no conversion.

Why the unit matters less than the assay

Two labs measuring the same blood can differ by 10 to 20 percent depending on the assay, and results from before about 2015 on older kits read lower still. Converting the unit correctly removes one source of confusion but not that one. When comparing results over time, use the same lab if you can, and compare the band (very low, low, normal, high) rather than the second decimal. How do I convert AMH from pmol/L to ng/mL?

Divide the pmol/L value by 7.14. So 14.3 pmol/L is 2.0 ng/mL, and 7.1 pmol/L is 1.0 ng/mL. To go the other way, multiply ng/mL by 7.14.

Is ng/mL the same as µg/L for AMH?

Yes. A nanogram per millilitre is exactly a microgram per litre, so a result of 2.0 ng/mL and 2.0 µg/L are the same number. Some European labs use µg/L.

Why do labs use different AMH units?

Convention. UK, Australian and most European labs report SI units (pmol/L); US labs and many fertility clinics report mass units (ng/mL). The molecular weight of AMH gives the 7.14 factor between them. Assay differences are a bigger source of variation than the unit.

What is a normal AMH in pmol/L?

Roughly 7 to 29 pmol/L (1.0 to 4.0 ng/mL) for reproductive-age adults, falling with age. Under 3.6 pmol/L (0.5 ng/mL) is very low; over 29 pmol/L is high and often seen in PCOS. Typical values by age are on the AMH calculator.

Can I compare two AMH results from different labs?

Only loosely. Converting the units is easy, but different assays (for example Roche Elecsys, Beckman Gen II, Ansh) give somewhat different numbers on the same sample, and older assays read lower. Compare the band, not the decimal places, and ask the clinic which assay they use.
