What AMH measures
Anti-Mullerian hormone is made by the small, early follicles in the ovary, so the level in your blood tracks how many of them there are: your ovarian reserve. It is stable across the cycle, which is why it can be tested on any day. It falls steadily with age and reaches near zero at menopause.
Two things it does not measure: egg quality, which is driven mainly by age, and whether you will conceive naturally soon. Large studies have found that people with low AMH conceive naturally at similar rates to those with normal AMH over a year. Where AMH is genuinely predictive is IVF: it forecasts how many eggs will be collected.
Reading your number
The bands here follow the thresholds most clinics use, and the age comparison uses approximate population ranges; your lab's own reference range applies to its assay. Hormonal contraception can lower a reading by a quarter or so. If the result is low for your age and you are planning a family, the useful next step is a conversation with a fertility clinic rather than a second test. What is a normal AMH level?
Roughly 1.0 to 4.0 ng/mL (about 7 to 29 pmol/L) is considered normal for reproductive-age adults, but what counts as typical falls with age: a median of around 4 ng/mL in the early twenties, 2.5 at 30 to 34, 1.5 at 35 to 37, 1.0 at 38 to 40 and 0.5 or less by the early forties. Assays vary, so compare with your own lab's reference range too.
What does a low AMH mean?
Fewer small follicles remain, which is called diminished ovarian reserve. It predicts fewer eggs at IVF collection and possibly an earlier menopause. It does not reliably predict whether you will conceive naturally in the next year, because a single good egg each month is enough; egg quality, which AMH does not measure, matters more for that.
What does a high AMH mean?
Many small follicles, which is common in polycystic ovary syndrome. Values above about 4 ng/mL, and especially above 6, are one of the pointers clinicians use alongside symptoms and ultrasound. In IVF a high AMH flags a risk of ovarian hyperstimulation, so stimulation doses are reduced.
How do I convert AMH from pmol/L to ng/mL?
Divide pmol/L by 7.14 to get ng/mL, or multiply ng/mL by 7.14 to get pmol/L. The calculator accepts either and shows both. UK results are usually in pmol/L; US results in ng/mL.
Can AMH predict when I will reach menopause?
Only roughly. Very low AMH in the late thirties or forties is associated with menopause within a few years, and models that combine AMH with age exist, but individual prediction remains imprecise. Cycle changes are a better guide to the transition than a single hormone value.
