Counting DPO the right way

DPO means days past ovulation. Ovulation day is 0 DPO. If you ovulated on a Monday, Tuesday is 1 DPO and the following Monday is 7 DPO. The count only makes sense if your ovulation date is right, so an OPK peak or a clear temperature shift beats a calendar estimate.

If you only know your last period, the calculator assumes you ovulated 14 days before your next period was due. For a 28-day cycle that is day 14; for a 32-day cycle it is day 18. Longer or shorter cycles shift ovulation, which is why counting from your period alone can put you a few DPO off.

What each DPO means for testing

The day-by-day table above follows the biology. Between 0 and 5 DPO the fertilised egg is still travelling, so there is nothing to detect. Implantation happens around 6 to 12 DPO, and hCG only starts rising after that. Early tests can catch a faint line from about 10 DPO; by 14 DPO, the day your period is due, almost any test will show a real pregnancy.

Wondering whether spotting was implantation? The implantation bleeding calculator checks the date against your window. For the best test day for your situation, use the when to take a pregnancy test calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out how many DPO I am?

Count the days since you ovulated. Ovulation day itself is 0 DPO, the next day is 1 DPO, and so on. If you tracked ovulation with an OPK peak or a basal body temperature shift, count from that day. If you did not track it, estimate ovulation as the first day of your last period plus your cycle length minus 14, then count forward from there.

What DPO does implantation happen?

Implantation usually happens between 6 and 12 DPO, with 8 to 10 DPO the most common. hCG, the hormone home tests detect, is only produced after implantation, which is why very early tests are so often negative even in a pregnancy that goes on to be confirmed.

What DPO can I take a pregnancy test?

A sensitive early-detection test can sometimes show a faint line from about 10 DPO. Most tests detect most pregnancies by 12 to 13 DPO. The best day is 14 DPO, the day your period is due, when hCG is usually high enough for any test. A negative before 12 DPO does not rule pregnancy out.

What does it mean if I am 16 DPO with no period and a negative test?

The most common explanation is that you ovulated later than you think, so you are really fewer DPO than counted. Stress, illness and travel can all push ovulation back. Retest in two to three days with first-morning urine. If your period is more than a week late with negative tests, see a clinician.

Can I tell if I am pregnant from my DPO symptoms?

Not reliably. Progesterone rises after every ovulation, whether or not you conceived, and it causes the same tender breasts, bloating, fatigue and mood changes people read as early pregnancy signs. Only a test taken at the right DPO can answer the question.
