Implantation happens when the embryo burrows into the uterine lining, 6 to 12 days after ovulation. A little blood can be released as it does, which is the spotting some people notice. Spotting before 6 DPO cannot be implantation. Spotting at 13 to 15 DPO overlaps with a period starting. Inside 6 to 12 DPO, the character of the bleeding decides: light, pink or brown, and brief fits implantation; red, building, and lasting days is a period.

How can I tell implantation bleeding from a period?
Implantation bleeding is light, pink or brown, does not fill a pad or tampon, has no clots, and stops within one to two days. A period usually starts light, builds to a red flow with possible clots, and lasts three to seven days. Can implantation bleeding happen on the day my period is due?

When should I take a pregnancy test after implantation bleeding?

What if the spotting is heavy or painful?
Implantation bleeding is never heavy. Bleeding that soaks a pad, contains clots, or comes with sharp one-sided pain, dizziness, or shoulder-tip pain needs medical attention the same day, as it can signal an ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage.
