How the implantation window is estimated
Ovulation is estimated from your last menstrual period (LMP) and cycle length: ovulation typically happens about 14 days before your next period. From there, implantation normally occurs between 6 and 12 days after ovulation, with most implantations happening around days 8-10 past ovulation (DPO).
The calculator adds 6, 9, and 12 days to the estimated ovulation date to give you the earliest, most likely, and latest implantation dates. The earliest reliable pregnancy test date is set to 12 DPO - the point at which hCG levels are usually detectable by a sensitive home test, assuming implantation has already completed.
From implantation to a positive test
After implantation, hCG begins to rise - but it takes several days to build up to a level most tests can detect. Testing too early is the most common reason for a false negative. For the most accurate timing, use the pregnancy test calculator, which works out both the earliest worth-testing date and the day a near-certain result is possible.
If you are trying to conceive, tracking when ovulation actually occurs gives you a more reliable window than date math alone. The ovulation calculator estimates your fertile days, and the Femora app refines the prediction based on your logged cycle history.
Frequently asked questions
When does implantation happen?
Implantation usually happens 6 to 12 days after ovulation, most often around 8 to 10 days past ovulation (DPO). The fertilized egg travels to the uterus and embeds in the lining, which is when the pregnancy hormone hCG starts to rise.
What is implantation bleeding?
Some people notice light spotting - much lighter than a period, often pink or brown - around the time of implantation. It is not universal, and its absence does not mean anything is wrong. Heavy bleeding is not implantation bleeding and should be checked.
Why can't I test for pregnancy right after implantation?
hCG only starts rising once implantation is underway, and it takes a couple more days to reach levels a home test can detect. Testing on the day implantation begins almost always gives a false negative. Waiting until around the date of your expected period gives a far more reliable result.
