How this checklist is built
It's the consensus list from US/UK hospitals and OB practices, slimmed down to what people actually use. Five categories, ordered by what you'll reach for first. If you're unsure when to pack, check the due date calculator; aim for 36 weeks at the latest.
A few quiet wins
Pack two going-home outfits for baby in different sizes - newborns vary by a few pounds. Bring lip balm: gas and air dries lips badly. Two phone chargers (one for you, one for your partner) avoids the only-one-outlet problem. And the car seat must be installed and tested before you go - hospitals won't discharge without one.
Frequently asked questions
When should I pack my hospital bag?
By 36 weeks at the latest. Many people pack at 34-35 weeks. Babies arrive on their own schedule - having the bag near the door means one less thing to think about if labour starts early.
What do hospitals usually provide?
Most provide: hospital gown, basic toiletries, peri-bottle, mesh underwear, heavy postpartum pads, newborn diapers, swaddle blankets, and baby's first hat. Bring your own version of anything you want softer, prettier, or specifically yours.
What's actually essential?
Documents (ID, insurance), going-home outfits (for you and baby), installed car seat, comfortable robe and slippers, phone charger, glasses if you wear contacts. Everything else is nice-to-have.
